Ninety Years | Ninety Memories

November 11, 1926 was a special day… the day a thoroughfare across the heartland of the U.S. was established; the day Route 66 was born. That means that later this year our beloved Mother Road will turn 90 years old.

better cake.jpgAs a way to mark this auspicious occasion, we’re compiling a list of your memories of Route 66. How about a nice round number, like 90 of them? If we start now, we should have no trouble at all coming up with 90 memories that recall fun, nostalgic and endearing times spent along Route 66. Throughout her lifetime, the Mother Road has brought people together and shortened the distance between America’s destinations. She has supported businesses, travelers and lifestyles along her 4000+ miles. How has Route 66 touched your life?

The Waldmire Road Yacht Talks!

by Preservation Chairman, John Weiss

When visitors to Pontiac stop to see Bob Waldmire's Road Yacht, they immediately want to know all about it: What its significance is and why it's on display at the Route 66 Association of Illinois Museum and Hall of Fame. The outside of the converted schoolbus is certainly interesting but most people want to explore the treasures that fill the inside as well. Unfortunately, the converted school bus can only be open to the public when an attendant is stationed inside.

Recently we added a message repeater system next to the front door to provide visitors with information about the bus even when no attendant is on site. The three minute message tells folks about the Road Yacht and Bob Waldmire and even includes a one minute message spoken by Bob himself. It also directs folks to the Bob Waldmire exhibit in the building behind the Road Yacht.

New Display Cases for the Museum!

by Museum Curator, John Wille

The Route 66 Association of Illinois recently purchased six new display cases for the Museum and Hall of Fame in Pontiac. With these cases we are able to more prominently display the memorabilia of our newest hall of Fame members. They provide room for future displays as well as for some items we currently have in storage. They also give the museum a fresh appearance. It is a lot of fun changing items around and adding new displays. As Route 66 approaches its 90th year and the museum moves toward its 12th year, visitors will have a new look to experience. Your are cordially invited to come see our new cases and the treasures they contain!

Breaking Ground for New Hotel in Pontiac, Illinois

Pontiac’s newest hotel has taken the first big step towards its completion, which is expected in 2016. A group of city officials, representatives from the Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce, the Pontiac Hotel Developers, LLC, Hotel Development Services of Oxford, Ohio, and the hotel’s new management team, Monchino Management LLC of Herrin, IL, conducted the ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday, December 2nd at the site of the new hotel near the Interstate 55 interchange.

The new hotel, a Hampton Inn, will offer 79 rooms for guests plus meeting spaces for small groups. The project has been nearly two years in the preparatory stage and is ready to begin the 6 million dollar construction phase of the project. Construction will be fully underway in the spring of 2016.
